Bjartur Publishing began life in 1990 and has enjoyed consistent growth ever since.
The company’s original focus was on publishing translations of world literature but in recent years the proportion of contemporary Icelandic writing has seen a steady increase. A turning point for Bjartur was the acquisition of the Harry Potter rights in 1999, with the books about the intrepid young wizard enjoying unrivalled popularity among Icelandic readers.
In 2003 Bjartur opened a Danish branch, Hr. Ferdinand, and started operations with the publication of Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code. In 2005 Hr. Ferdinand & Bjartur opened a branch in Norway, the Norwegian Hr. Ferdinand, but with its unique profile.
In 2008 Hr. Ferdinand and Bjartur seperated, Hr. Ferdinand blooming on the continent and Bjartur in Iceland. Bjartur and a younger publishing house, Verold, united under the directon of publisher Pétur Már Ólafsson, and hand in hand Bjartur & Verold are the second biggest Publishing house in Iceland.
Together Bjartur & Veröld are and will be committed to publishing smart, interesting titles designed to enrich people’s lives.
